Welcoming back the Mercian Regiment

5th December 2009

On the 4th December, Pauline had the opportunity to once again welcome home members of the Mercian regiment on their return from Afghanistan.

The ceremony was held at Derby Cathedral, with thousands lining the streets to pay their respects to the work and sacrifice the regiment had made there.

After the service in the Cathedral, Pauline and the current Mayor, Cllr Sean Marshall watched the march past of the regiment along the Cornmarket in Derby.

Pauline said:
“The men and women who serve in our armed services are so brave and deserve to be honoured in this way. The people of Derby did not disappoint because they turned out in force to salute their bravery and courage.”

When Pauline Latham was the Mayor of Derby, in 2007/8, she had the privilege of giving members of the Mercian Regiment the freedom of the City. (Click here to see Mayoral photos).
