Belper Charity, The Drop Inn, nominated for award that recognises outstanding charities
6th December 2011
Mid Derbyshire MP, Pauline Latham, has nominated The Drop Inn, a brilliant local charity in Belper that gives a place for the young people to meet and engage in positive activities or just call in and socialise with their friends. The Drop Inn, found at Unit 1 on Derwent Street, Belper, offers a recording Studio, a film-editing suite, a 20-foot indoor Skate ramp, U.V Graffit Wall, Club Style Sound system. In addition, the Drop Inn offers accredited courses and alternative education, such as creative multi-media workshops.
The aim of The Drop Inn is to improve intergenerational relations, encourage community cohesion, run police diversion schemes and disability inclusion projects. Having visited The Drop Inn before becoming an MP and several times after being elected, Pauline had no hesitation in nominating The Drop Inn, given all the brilliant work they have done and continue to do in Belper.
The award is offered by the Centre for Social Justice, and recognises charities that tackle Family breakdown, Education failure, Worklessness, Debt and Addiction. Winning charities will receive a £10,000 cash prize, which will be awarded at an event in London in July 2012.
In response to their nomination, Andrea Fox, Founder of The Drop Inn, said, “It is a great honour to find that we have been nominated by Pauline for this award. It is great for our volunteers to be recognised for all the hard work and dedication they show supporting young people within the community. All our work is unpaid, so it is wonderful to know that it is appreciated. We are all very proud to be nominated.
“If we should win the award, not only would it bring positive publicity and further support for The Drop Inn, the prize money would secure the future of the centre for a year enabling us to continue and further expand the valuable work we do. Winning would also inspire our volunteers and encourage other young people to take part in our projects, activities.
“Even if we don’t win, just being nominated certainly makes the entire team feel extremely proud!”
Talking about the nomination, Pauline Latham said, “I am pleased I have had the opportunity to nominate The Drop Inn. Having visited them on several occasions, I certainly had no hesitation in putting them forward for this prestigious award from the Centre for Social Justice.
“£10,000 would mean be so much to Andrea and her team at The Drop Inn, so I will do all I can to support and help them get the recognition they deserve at the awards ceremony next June.”
