Pauline Latham discusses the importance of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site to the area
9th April 2009
The site is recognised to be of great universal cultural value and its significance lies in its involvement with the birth of the factory system. A large section of this runs through the Mid Derbyshire constituency, of which Pauline is delighted. Meeting with Adrian Farmer, the Co-coordinator of the Derwent Valley Mills Site, they talked about the importance of the Site and the potential tourism opportunities that the Mills provide the area with and at a time of economic crisis these are the opportunities to seize. At present a tourism master plan is being developed for the Site and Belper will play a key role in this.
Pauline has said that ‘Should I be fortunate as to be elected I would like to be on the All Party Parliamentary Group on World Heritage Sites and participate to champion this valuable asset within the constituency.’
Adrian Farmer said ‘It was very helpful hearing from Pauline her thoughts on the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site and how we can maximise benefits from World Heritage Status for the area and the people living in it. Ours is the only World Heritage Site in the East Midlands and it’s important people understand and care for it in order that it is conserved for the future and attracts visitors who can benefit the local economy’
