A visit to meet Derbyshire farmers
18th June 2009
Pauline met with market managers and some of the many farmers in her constituency to hear about their concerns and issues.
While the weekly livestock auctions were taking place, Pauline joined with Shadow Minister for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, Richard Benyon MP who is himself a farmer, to listen to and discuss the concerns of local farmers. Among the issues of particular concern were those of farmers trying to diversify in adverse economic times and having difficulties with the planning systems to enable them to proceed.
She also met with the managers of the market to understand how they operated.
Pauline sais:
“I was impressed by the efficient running of the Derby Market and the people I met. The support by Richard was invaluable, since he understands farming issues so well – a rare attribute among today’s politicians dealing with farming matters, especially in the Government. As a farmer himself he was popular with our farmers”
