Visit with Mayor of Derby to work of Street Pastors
30th October 2009
On a cold evening at the end of October, Pauline went with the Mayor of Derby, Sean Marshall, to spend the evening seeing the work of Street Pastors, an initiative led by Ally Kay, Director of Derby City Mission. Street Pastors is a group of local Christians, both men and women, from several different churches, who work in teams on the streets on Friday and Saturday nights and help people who are in difficulties. For example they will provide practical help such as sandals for women who cannot wear high heels at the end of an evening, or provide space blankets for those who are cold. Occasionally they are needed to help prevent fights breaking out, and to talk to people who are in distress.
Pauline said:
"I was very impressed that they were not there to preach. They were their doing their Christian duty, helping people without being judgmental. It is a considerable commitment on their part, since they are all volunteers. Fortunately it was quite a quiet night when we went out with the Street Pastors, which meant that we were able to talk to the teams and understand what they were trying to do."
