About Mid Derbyshire

Mid Derbyshire is a new constituency which comes into being at the next General Election as is the result of the Boundary Commission’s boundary changes.

It is formed from parts of four different constituencies and comprises:

• Allestree, Oakwood and Spondon from Derby North
• Duffield and Belper from West Derbyshire (now known as Derbyshire Dales)
• Little Eaton, Breadsall and Morley from Amber Valley, and
• Stanley and Stanley Common, West Hallam, Dale Abbey, Ockbrook and Borrowash from Erewash.

There are 11 town and Parish councils in the area; two borough councils; Amber Valley and Erewash, one Unitary Council; Derby City and Derbyshire County Council. There are two PCT’s and three Police Divisions.

This makes it a very complex constituency with no real centre. Some of the schools are controlled by Derby City Council because that is a Unitary Authority and some by the County Council.

It is a rich mixture of rural and urban with several small villages and towns as well as part of the city.

There is a lot of historical character in the area with places like Dale Abbey and Belper. Belper is a significant part of the World Heritage Site known as Derwent Valley Mills which follows the River Derwent up from the Silk Mill in Derby right up to Cromford near Matlock and Matlock Bath.

Derby University is also within Mid Derbyshire, which is an up and coming University serving the local community well. Many of its students are from the surrounding area.
