Promoting Small Businesses

Pauline Latham OBE MP has given her strong support to Mid-Derbyshire’s small business community in a visit to Markeaton Craft Village on Small Business Saturday.

Mid-Derbyshire’s MP visited six businesses on Small Businesses Saturday, a non-political grass roots campaign started in 2013 to promote small and independent local businesses and encourage people to shop at them.

On a visit with her family Mid-Derbyshire’s MP called into the successful craft village meeting with businesses working there.

The craft village, which opened in 1987, hosts a variety of workshops and businesses which Mrs Latham visited discussing how their business is and what she can to do support them in her role as an MP.

She visited; Studio in the Park which sells rustic, handmade gifts including hand painted furniture and beautiful christmas decorations, cards, toys and plenty of little things for the home.

Matthew Morris Furniture which creates handcrafted hardwood furniture, particularly quality kitchen furniture. Upcycled Creative, a business that turns unwanted products into new funky lights and furniture from old fire extinguishers and plumbing pipes, Derby Stained Glass, which is celebrating 20 years in business, and produces and repairs stained glass creations and Anne-Marie Jewellery, which designs and produces unique pieces of jewellery.

Mrs Latham also visited the Orangery Café in the Craft Village talking with staff about working in the Café which has recently reopened after major refurbishments.

Small businesses create a third of UK turnover, contributing £1.2 trillion to the economy. In 2014 more than 200 MPs from different parties pledged their support and 16.5 million people shopped in a small independent business, spending more than £500 million on the day. Now in its third year the 2015 event is expected to have been the largest ever.

Speaking after her visit Pauline Latham OBE MP said: “Small businesses are the backbone of our economy and create almost half of all jobs in the UK. I hope people went local on Saturday and used one of the many small businesses in our area. They make Mid-Derbyshire such a great place to shop in”.

“The businesses in the Craft Village are fantastic. They are so creative and are a testament to their talented and dedicated owners. I am very lucky to have them in my constituency. What I have found really encouraging is hearing that new businesses who are now looking to expand their premises to the Craft Village in the New Year. I encourage anyone who has never been to the Craft Village to come down and check out the businesses for themselves”.
