Thank you for contacting me about the language used by Members in the House of Commons.
The House of Commons Chamber has always been an extremely lively place. Members on all sides feel passionately about the issues being discussed and, in general, I would prefer to have a House full of MPs who care enough to make their feelings heard than any alternative.
Passionate disagreement with others is fine, especially when there is a common desire to achieve what we all think is best for our country, but this must never stray into abuse or intimidation. It is incumbent on MPs across the House to treat each other with respect. There is no question that tempers have become frayed in recent weeks and months, but responsibility for this lies with everyone.
The House of Commons is by convention a very courteous place, but I agree that we must all be mindful of the words we use when expressing our views, no matter how passionately we feel.
Thank you again for taking the time to contact me.
