In 1932-33, the Soviet Union set out to destroy the nation of Ukraine, through a forced famine which killed millions of Ukrainians. This is known as Ukraine as the Holodomor – the murder by hunger.
Since 2013, I have held three debates in Parliament asking the Government to recognise the Holodomor officially as a genocide.
Today, it has never been more important to remind those rogue states who may be committing war crimes, or crimes against humanity, that they will be held to account for their crimes.
With what is currently going on in Ukraine, which I saw first hand during my visit as part of the UK parliamentary delegation to Kyiv last month, we must recognise the Holodomor as a genocide. This will remind Russia that it cannot now, as it did then, attempt to destroy the concept of a Ukrainian nation, whether by forced famine or by full-scale military invasion.
